Contact a friend 3 times per week

23 May 2007

Long-term weight loss requires support.  A study has found that people who met regularly with a dietitian or attended groups like Weight Watchers were more likely to maintain their losses than those who didn’t.

If you can’t attend group meetings, announce your weight loss intentions so friends can support you. Add a dieter pal to your regular call or e-mail list, too.

Why P.M. workouts are sometimes best

21 May 2007

It’s no coincidence that your interval workouts often feel easier later in the day.  Researchers at the University of South Carolina found that people swam a 200-meeter time trial nearly six seconds faster in the early evening than they did in the morning.

“This should hold true for any brief (five-minute) athletic performance, such as sprinting”, says Shawn Youngstedt, the study’s author.  So if you’ve been chasing a personal best, sleep in – and do your speed sessions after work. At what time do you feel is better for you?  Post a reply and share your experience!

A proven way to strengthen your relationship

19 May 2007

You know it’s important to be supportive when your guy is going through a rouge time, but responding positively to his success could be just as crucial to your bond, according to a new research from the University of California.

Being enthusiastic builds your partner’s self-esteem because it shows you understand him.  And that feeling paves the way for him to open up to you in the future – whether the news is good or bad.

Win the weight loss game

17 May 2007

Researchers specialized in the human being behaviors know that if you really want to make a change in your lifestyle, you need at least a 4 day period to adjust yourself.

Dr. Martha Beck, author of The Four-Day Win, applies this method in her book.  She proposes that instead of cutting drastically your caloric intake, you do it slowly, reducing around 100 calories per day.  Then you should give your body a 3 day time frame so it can adjust to that loss.  At the fourth day you will not feel hungry, and that is what Dr. Beck calls the 4 day “win”.

Her plan includes five 4-day cycles.  You should eat less in each cycle.  If you add one extra day at the end, you will get a total of three weeks.  By then, your new reduction plan will be a habit.  Keep that calorie intake level until you reach your goal.  If you get stuck earlier, start another 21 day cycle to reduce even more your intake and start loosing weight.    Try this method and let us know how you go.  Post a reply. We would love to hear from you!
